Free EPA Method 22 Form Download
EPA Method 22 observations are used to determine the presence or absence of visible emissions from emission points, fugitive sources, process equipment, buildings and other regulated operations. Unlike EPA Method 9, EPA Method 22 does not require observer certification, but it does require accurate observation procedures and proper documentation.
To help visible emissions observers stay organized, VR Smoke School now offers a free blank EPA Method 22 form in PDF format.

What Is EPA Method 22?
EPA Method 22 is a visible emissions observation method used to document whether emissions are present during a specified observation period. The method is often used for work practices, compliance demonstrations, inspections, and visible emissions monitoring requirements where the standard is based on the presence, absence, duration, or frequency of visible emissions.
While EPA Method 22 does not require certification, observers should still understand the proper procedures before completing the form. In fact, EPA Method 22 recommends completing a smoke school lecture course before performing observations. Accurate documentation matters, especially when the form is being used for regulatory records, compliance reporting or internal environmental audits.
How to Complete the EPA Method 22 Form
The blank EPA Method 22 form is available as a free downloadable PDF. Instructions for properly completing the form are included in the online lecture available through our virtual smoke school program. Our lecture covers all visible emission observation techniques, including EPA Method 22. There is no charge to access the lecture.
EPA Method 22 vs. EPA Method 9
EPA Method 22 and EPA Method 9 are both visible emissions methods, but they are used for different purposes.
EPA Method 22 is used to determine whether visible emissions are present and to document the duration or frequency of those emissions. EPA Method 9 is used to determine the opacity of visible emissions and requires a certified visible emissions observer.

About VR Smoke School and ALT-152
VR Smoke School is an EPA-approved alternative to traditional in-person smoke school for EPA Method 9 certification. The founder of VR Smoke School authored ALT-152, the EPA-approved alternative method that allows Method 9 certification to be completed using approved virtual reality technology.
Learn more about the EPA-approved alternative method in our ALT-152 Guide.
Our VR Smoke School Process page covers everything from registration to EPA Method 9 certification.
