EPA Method 9 Certification in Idaho
VR Smoke School allows professionals in Idaho to earn EPA Method 9 visible emissions certification through an EPA-approved virtual smoke school program. This certification may be used where opacity observations are required under federal regulations and state air quality programs administered by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
Observers who successfully complete the official visual opacity test receive the same EPA Method 9 certification issued through traditional in-person smoke school programs. The certification standard remains the same, while the training and testing process can now be completed remotely.

Is Our Virtual Smoke School Accepted for Idaho Opacity Observers?
Yes. For State-regulated sources, the VR Smoke School program can be used by previously field-certified observers for recertification. For initial certification (individuals not previously Method 9 certified), please contact Emanuel Ziolkowski at (208) 373-0102 with Idaho DEQ for approval. Approval is only needed for you initial certification if you have not previously been certified at an in-person smoke school.
After passing the required visual evaluation, observers receive an EPA Method 9 certification that remains valid for six months. The visual testing procedures, scoring standards, and certification requirements are the same as those used in conventional in-person smoke school programs.

EPA-Approved ALT-152 Virtual Smoke School
VR Smoke School operates under EPA approval as an ALT-152 virtual smoke school provider. ALT-152 is an alternative method approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that allows qualified observers to earn EPA Method 9 opacity certification through a compliant virtual training and testing environment.
Before any ALT-152 provider can offer certification, the provider must satisfy detailed EPA requirements for smoke generation, video quality, hardware, testing procedures, and recordkeeping. The provider must also demonstrate that students trained through the virtual program achieve results equivalent to or better than those trained through traditional smoke school.

How to Obtain EPA Method 9 Certification in Idaho
