Smoke School Options in Hawaii
VR Smoke School allows professionals in Hawaii to earn EPA Method 9 visible emissions certification through an EPA-approved virtual smoke school program. This certification may be used where opacity observations are required under federal regulations and state air quality programs administered by the Hawaii Department of Health.
Observers who successfully complete the official visual opacity test receive the same EPA Method 9 certification issued through traditional in-person smoke school programs. The certification requirements remain the same, while the training and testing process can now be completed remotely.
Our program gives Hawaii students a flexible way to complete lecture training, practice observations, and EPA Method 9 certification testing using approved virtual reality technology from their home or office.

Is VR Smoke School Accepted for Hawaii Opacity Observers?
Yes. Observers in Hawaii may obtain EPA Method 9 certification through VR Smoke School and use that certification when conducting visible emissions observations on regulated air emission sources.
After passing the required visual evaluation, observers receive an EPA Method 9 certification that remains valid for six months. The visual testing procedures, scoring standards, and certification requirements are the same as those used in conventional in-person smoke school programs.

EPA-Approved ALT-152 Virtual Smoke School
VR Smoke School operates under EPA approval as an ALT-152 virtual smoke school provider. ALT-152 is an alternative method approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that allows qualified observers to earn EPA Method 9 opacity certification through a compliant virtual training and testing environment.
Before any ALT-152 provider can offer certification, the provider must satisfy detailed EPA requirements for smoke generation, video quality, hardware, testing procedures, and recordkeeping. The provider must also demonstrate that students trained through the virtual program achieve results equivalent to or better than those trained through traditional smoke school.

How to Obtain EPA Method 9 Certification in Hawaii
The VR Smoke School platform allows Hawaii observers to complete training and certification online instead of traveling to a scheduled smoke school event. Students can review the lecture course, practice plume readings, and complete the official visual opacity test through our remote platform from any computer or VR headset.
This approach gives observers the ability to prepare at their own pace before taking the certification test on an approved VR headset. Approved headsets can be purchased for under $300 from most retailers and used for an unlimited number of students and certifications.
