Why is a VR Headset Needed for ALT-152?

ALT-152 is known as the VR Smoke School method but the requirement of a VR headset is not for the reason you may think. We'll explain why it's needed.

Why is a VR Headset Needed for ALT-152?

Many people assume that ALT-152 requires a virtual reality (VR) headset to create a 3D environment where users can move around and interact with virtual smoke plumes. That is not the case. ALT-152 requires a VR headset primarily to block ambient light and ensure consistent display quality of the videos used for certification.

VR Smoke School Videos are Not 3D

The videos shown in the headset are not 3D—they are 2D (flat) videos captured to provide a clear view of the plume against its background. The observer watches these videos just as they would on a TV or computer monitor. With a VR headset, the screen can be enlarged and slightly wrapped to create a more controlled viewing experience. The VR Smoke School Program does not require movement; all activities are completed while seated.

Easy to Use - With or Without a Headset

VR Smoke School is designed so users can access the full program from a desktop, laptop or VR headset. While certification must be completed on a VR headset, users can practice, review materials and explore the platform from any device at no cost. The program experience is consistent across all devices.

When ready to certify, users simply switch to an approved VR headset and complete the test. Once they pass, they can purchase their certification. Approved headsets are widely available for under $300 and can be shared among multiple users.

The VR Smoke School Program is designed to be simple and intuitive—even for first-time VR users. It has also been shown to improve accuracy, with EPA-published research indicating that observers trained using the VR program performed more accurately than those trained at in-person smoke schools.
