Smoke School, EPA Method 9 and ALT-152 Explained

A brief explanation of the relationship between smoke school, EPA Test Method 9 and EPA ALT-152.

What is EPA Method 9?

EPA Method 9 is a test method for determining the opacity of visible emissions. It details how to observe opacity, how to document opacity observations and the requirements for becoming certified. An individual can perform EPA Method 9 observations after they are certified at a smoke school.

What is Smoke School?

Smoke school is the process for training and certifying individuals to perform EPA Method 9 observations. Smoke school consists of two components: a lecture course and a visual test. The lecture is completed once every three years, and the visual test must be successfully completed every six months to maintain EPA Method 9 certification. Smoke school can be completed at an in-person event or by using a virtual reality (VR) program.

What is ALT-152?

ALT-152 is an EPA-approved method for obtaining EPA Method 9 certification. ALT-152 allows the use of a VR program to earn certification instead of attending an in-person smoke school. A person certified completing either ALT-152 or in-person smoke school will be certified to perform EPA Method 9 observations. The end result is the same.
